7 year old birthday party
Tuesday is Thing # 1’s birthday, and today is his party. I usually go all out for birthday parties–I’m going to do a series on that soon–but this year, I have had multiple health issues. Dealing with pain and fatigue, I just bought some balloons, a banner, and a cake. I didn’t make hand-crafted decorations, or think of several games for the kids to play, or make a super cool cake from scratch. What I discovered is this–he doesn’t care. He didn’t whine about my not spending hours piping intricate details onto carefully crafted stacks of cake. He wasn’t upset that I did not stay up late drawing and cutting and gluing a neat centerpiece. He is excited just that he is having a party.
I never had a birthday party when I was a child. In my quest to be supermom, I wanted to give them everything I never had, and multiply it. I suppose it’s for my own benefit, as they don’t know they’re getting a super cool party to make up for the one I didn’t have; they know they’re getting a party!
Of course, having had this realization, the next birthday I have more energy, I’ll throw another super-neat party ![]()
